This is Jean Ritchie, born in Viper, Kentucky, in 1922.  Well I was the last one in the family, number 14, and had a lot of older sisters—There was 11 girls born in the family, and 3 boys.  And we . . . didn’t have much entertainment, but just what we could do ourselves.  Even when I was a baby there wasn’t much besides Saturday night square dances at someone’s house. . . .  Or . . . just sitting on the porch and singing.  Everybody had a, could carry a tune, you know.  So we liked to sing together, and we’d . . .  Us girls would sing over the dish and— the songs we knew were the songs we learned from the old folks. . . .
