Women in Kentucky - PIONEERS

Anne McGinty  (Mercer, n. d.)
Brought the first spinning wheel to Kentucky and became Kentucky’s first clothing manufacturer.  A replica of her cabin can be seen at Old Fort Harrod today.

Esther Whitley  (Lincoln, 1755-1833)
Whitley is Kentucky’s answer to Annie Oakley.  Her shooting skills were legendary and her rifle remains on view at the William Whitley House near Crab Orchard.

Jenny Wiley  (Floyd, 1760-1831)
One of Kentucky’s most famous pioneer women to brave the new frontier.  Today,
there is a State Park named in her honor. Visit the Jenny Wiley Association's Web site for more information about her, a bibliography, and information about her descendents.
