Geri Grigsby
has an impressive list of national and state-wide basketball scoring
records, titles and awards, and hall of fame inductions .
She was also the valedictorian of her senior class, received
awards in creative writing and history, and went on to law school at the
University of Kentucky and a career as an attorney.
And she is equally proud of all of these achievements.
Grigsby grew up
in what she refers to as a basketball family.
She was in high school in the 1970s and was among the first group
of girls to benefit from legislation passed by the Kentucky General
Assembly as well as Title IX legislation passed by the
federal
government, which required that institutions receiving federal funding
treat both genders equally in the programs and activities that they
provide. It was not until
her sophomore year that there was even a basketball team for girls,
making her achievements all the more impressive.
Since 1998,
Grigsby has served as the General Counsel for the state Transportation
Cabinet. Prior to this
position, she served as the Senior Attorney with the U.S. Equal
Opportunity Commission, Associate Counsel with the U.S. House of
Representatives, and as a Staff Attorney with the Kentucky General
Assembly Legislative Research Commission.
